This international Women’s Awareness Month, AWARE, Inc. reemphasizes its commitment to creating safe and empowered spaces for women, particularly in the workplace. While significant progress has been made, workplace sexual harassment remains a persistent issue, hindering women’s professional growth and overall wellbeing.

The Issue: The Prevalence and Impact of Workplace Sexual Harassment

Statistics paint a concerning picture: according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), around 23% of women in the United States experience workplace sexual harassment at some point in their careers. This harassment can manifest in various forms, ranging in unwanted comments and jokes to inappropriate touching and advances.

The impacts are far-reaching, affecting not only the emotional and mental well-being of the victims but also hindering their career opportunities. Women experiencing harassment often face decreased productivity, missed promotions, and even job loss.

Empowering Solutions: Fostering a Culture of Respect and Prevention

AWARE believes a multi-pronged approach is crucial to combat workplace sexual harassment effectively. Here are some key solutions to consider.

1. Building a Culture of Respect:

  • Zero-tolerance policy: Implementing a clear and comprehensive policy outlining unacceptable behavior and outlining reporting procedures.
  • Diversity and inclusion training: Regular training programs addressing unconscious bias, respectful communication, and bystander intervention.
  • Open communication channels: Encouraging open communication and fostering a culture where employees feel comfortable reporting incidents without fear of retaliation.

2. Empowering Bystanders:

  • Bystander intervention training: Equipping employees with the tools and strategies to intervene in and report instances of harassment effectively.
  • Active listening and support: Encourage bystanders to listen without judgement and support victims who choose to confide in them.

3. Supporting Victims:

  • Providing confidential reporting channels: Establishing confidential hotlines, online reporting systems, or designated individuals where victims can report incidents freely.
  • Offering trauma-informed support services: Partnering with mental health professionals to provide support and resources for victims dealing with the emotional aftermath of harassment.

Taking Action: Be the Change You Want to See

This International Women’s Awareness Month, let’s collectively take action to create a future where workplaces are free from sexual harassment. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

  • Speak Up: If you witness or experience harassment, report it using the designated channels within your organization.
  • Be an Active Bystander: Learn how to intervene effectively using the bystander intervention training offered by Mercer AWARE or other reputable organizations.
  • Spread Awareness: Share information about resources available to victims and encourage conversations about creating a respectful workplace environment.

Remember, even small actions have the power to create positive change. Together, we can create a world where women feel safe, empowered, and valued in every aspect of their lives, including their professional endeavors. Let’s celebrate women’s strength and resilience and create workplaces that deserve the power they bring.
